Local Sites - Rixton Clay Pits
The glacial boulder clay underlying this site was formerly extracted and used in extensive,
local bricworks. Working ceased in the 1960s resulting in a variety of different sized ponds.
The site has subsequently been designated as an SSSI, primarily because of occurrence of the
Great Crested Newt, but it is also of great interest because of the species rich
grasslands and acquatic plants. Plants of interest include yellowort, common centaury,
marsh orchids, ragged robin, cyperus sedge.
